Turkey red dyeing:
in Britain

The industry began in Britain in about 1785. The first factories were set up in Manchester and Glasgow in the early nineteenth century and the Turkey red industry then became concentrated in the Vale of Leven in Dunbartonshire. By the middle of the century the factories in this area dominated the world market. This situation continued until the 1920s when the industry went into decline, made obsolete by the introduction of new synthetic dyes which were cheaper to use.
