Basic (cationic) dyes are used to dye polypropenonitrile (acrylic) fibres with an acidic character. The mechanism by which basic dyes are absorbed onto the acrylic fibres is believed to one of ion exchange, analogous to the mechanism, whereby the cations of acidic fibres are replaced by the dye cations.
