He
was also a perfectionist, writing in August 1876: '...I can never be contented
with getting anything short of the best... and should consider anything
that was only tolerable as a ladder to mount up to the next stage - that
is, in fact - my life'.
Morris's achievements with the printing of textiles are closely linked with his ambition to revive natural dyeing techniques, which he thought essential in order to produce the effects he required. Progress towards satisfactory results was slow. |

Morris: designer and manufacturer
Morris became a successful textile designer and manufacturer for a number of reasons. He insisted on good quality raw materials, he explored various modern and ancient techniques and contributed considerable physical and mental effort to the production of dyes and textiles. |
Success
was eventually achieved over many years of experimentation and study.
In this he initially enlisted the help of other manufacturers until he
was able to independently achieve the high standards he insisted upon.
