Semi-permanent colouring

These colorants resist several shampooings and are based on direct dyes of low molecular weight. The dyes are capable of penetrating the cuticle and diffusing throughout the cortex. These level 1 products (an industry classification system: in this case, it covers all direct colorants including, somewhat misleadingly, the temporaries) are often the first steps in hair colouring for new users.

They cover grey hair (when the coverage is 20% of the total), they require no mixing and contain no ammonia or peroxide. Nitrophenylenediamines and nitroaminophenols provide yellow through to violet colours and aminoanthraquinones give violets and blues.
