The SDC Colour Museum

Background

The second floor gallery featuring a display on technological developments in the coloration industry was first completed in 1982 and has undergone various reinventions since. As a result of this Colour and Textiles gallery, the museum was awarded the title of Best Museum of Industrial or Social History in 1988.

The museum is situated in a former wool warehouse in the centre of Bradford, at the headquarters of the Society of Dyers and Colourists. The first phase of the museum was opened in 1978 by the TV personality Dr Magnus Pyke and included the World of Colour gallery - the colour education exhibition.

A visit to Britain's only Colour Museum is an educational one, covering all aspects of colour and the coloration industry, and moreover it is fun!

Since then the museum has undergone various phases of redevelopment to include temporary exhibition space, a museum shop and the creation of the Colour Centre, where the various workshops are run.
