The Vikings and colour

Who were the Vikings?

The Vikings were people who lived in Scandinavia between 750 and 1100 AD. At first they were craftsmen, farmers and traders, but during the 9th century they began to invade other areas of Europe.

They travelled to Britain in long-boats made of oak with great sails. To begin with they came in small numbers, raiding the British people and then returning home with treasure and slaves. As time went on the Viking raiders began to settle in Britain, and in 866 Jorvik, now known as York, became the capital of the Viking kingdom. The Vikings brought with them their own customs and beliefs, as well as fashions, skills and language.
