The Egyptians and colour |
![]() |
Buried with him was everything he would need in the after-life. The Egyptians believed that they began a new life after they died, and so furniture, clothing, money and even slaves and animals were buried in the tombs with them. The tomb of Tutankhamun was left unopened until 1922 when archaeologists, Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered the entrance hidden under rocks and soil. Inside they found great riches, statues made of gold, and finally the King himself. |
King Tutankhamun was buried in a series of coffins, one inside the other, spectacularly decorated with precious and semiprecious jewels, and elaborate paintings depicting the life of the king when he was alive. Howard Carter found the body of Tutankhamun wrapped in bandages, encased in a golden mask, decorated with stripes of blue glass. On the brow of the mask were two figures: a cobra symbolising sovereignty over Lower Egypt, and a vulture symbolising sovereignty over Upper Egypt. The mask contained pieces of coloured glass, cornelian, lapis lazuli, quartz and obsidian. |
